Why Electrolytes Are One of My Non-Negotiables for Fitness and Wellness
If you’ve been following my fitness journey recently, you’ll know I’ve been focusing much more on taking care of my body from the inside out. Alongside training and nutrition, there are a few things that have become completely non-negotiable for me – and one of them is electrolytes.
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and help your body perform essential functions. The main ones include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and phosphate. Drinking fluids that contain electrolytes helps your body stay balanced and function properly, especially if you’re exercising, sweating or trying to stay properly hydrated.
Why electrolytes matter
Electrolytes play an important role in several key functions in the body.
Maintaining fluid balance
Electrolytes help control how water moves in and out of your cells. Sodium and potassium are particularly important for regulating hydration levels. Without enough electrolytes, water can’t be distributed properly throughout the body, which can leave you feeling tired or dehydrated.
Supporting muscle function
Your muscles – including your heart – rely on electrolytes to contract and relax properly. When electrolyte levels are low, it can sometimes lead to muscle cramps, weakness or spasms, which is why they’re especially important when you’re active.
Helping nerve signalling
Your nerves use electrical signals to communicate with muscles and organs throughout the body. Electrolytes carry the electrical charges that allow those signals to travel efficiently.
